Fall of the Wild: Drakes Bay Oyster Farm

Photo assignment for Brink Magazine to accompany the story “Fall of the Wild,”Spring 2008
A controversy has been roiling in Point Reyes around the hundred-year-old Drakes Bay Oyster Farm. National Park Service officials want to shut the operation when its permit expires in 2012; the owner and local farmers and ranchers want it to keep going, the last oyster cannery in California and, they add, a sustainable operation that actually cleans the water. It’s a situation that pits strict preservationists against proponents of sustainable agriculture. As owner Kevin Lunny told me, “They want to sacrifice the environment in the name of conservation.”
